Duct leakage means conditioned air is escaping from the duct system before it reaches the rooms, or unconditioned air is being pulled into the duct system before it reaches the equipment. Both sides matter.

Supply duct leaks lose air that has already been cooled or heated. In summer, your AC spends energy removing heat and moisture from the air. If that air leaks into the attic, you’ve paid for cooling that never reaches the living space. The rooms served by that branch may feel weak, warm, or inconsistent.

Return duct leaks can pull air from places you don’t want in your breathing zone. If the return side is located in an attic, crawl space, basement, or wall cavity, leaks can pull in hot air, humid air, dusty air, and odors. That forces the HVAC system to condition a messier air stream, and it can make the house feel sticky even when the AC runs for a long time.

Duct leakage is a problem anywhere, but Georgia homes face a rough combination of heat, humidity, and attic conditions. Around Atlanta, many duct systems live in vented attics. Static pressure is resistance inside the duct system. If it’s too high, the blower has to work harder to move air. You don’t need professional tools to notice the warning signs. Walk around the house while the AC is running. Feel the airflow at each supply register.
