Most homeowners think of cooling as one piece of equipment sitting outside. If the house is hot, the AC must be bad. Sometimes that’s true. A failing compressor, dirty evaporator coil, low refrigerant charge, weak capacitor, or aging blower motor can absolutely cause poor cooling.

A typical residential cooling system is designed around roughly 350 to 450 cubic feet per minute of airflow per ton of cooling capacity. A 3-ton system often needs around 1,200 CFM moving through it. If restricted ducts, undersized returns, crushed flex duct, dirty coils, or high static pressure bring that airflow down to 800 CFM, your AC may run constantly without delivering enough cooling to the rooms that need it.

Atlanta homes ask a lot from their HVAC systems. Summer heat here isn’t just hot. It’s heavy. Humidity makes a 92-degree day feel worse, and that moisture affects comfort even when the thermostat looks reasonable.

One of the most useful measurements we take is static pressure. We often describe it as the blood pressure of the HVAC system. If it’s too high, the blower has to work harder to move air. That extra strain can reduce airflow, increase noise, raise energy use, and shorten equipment life.

High static pressure can come from several places. The return duct may be too small. The filter may be too restrictive for the system. The supply trunk may be undersized. Flex ducts may be kinked, sagging, or crushed. Registers may be poorly selected. The coil may be dirty. Sometimes the ductwork was never sized correctly for the equipment installed.

A homeowner might only notice that the bedroom is hot or the system sounds loud. We see the numbers behind that symptom.

A larger AC needs more airflow. If the duct system is already too restrictive for the existing unit, upsizing the equipment can make static pressure worse. The system may get louder.
